MMF and Government of Manitoba Sign First Metis Housing Agreement in Western Canada
For immediate release
December 11, 2009
WINNIPEG – Today the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) signed a historic new agreement with the Manitoba government, which will enable it to renew 645 public housing units in rural, northern and remote Manitoba communities.
The first of its kind in Western Canada, the agreement will allow the MMF to develop a comprehensive and strategic approach to housing renovations, as opposed to managing housing project-by-project. It will also provide $4.3 million to the Community Housing Managers of Manitoba (CHMM), a subsidiary of the MMF, to renovate up to 645 public housing units it currently manages on behalf of Manitoba Housing.
“The Metis family is the bedrock of our Metis Nation, and proper housing enables our families to have a good start in raising our children and grandchildren,” said MMF President David Chartrand. “This partnership with the province builds on the strengths that the MMF has already proven in this industry over the years.”
Today’s agreement builds on the foundation that was established by a property management agreement signed 15 years ago.
The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Metis people of Manitoba.
