Manitoba Metis Federation releases fingerlings in St. Laurent rearing ponds
For immediate release
June 24, 2010
Winnipeg – Thursday June 24, 2010 - The Manitoba Metis Federation in its ongoing efforts towards conservation to help strengthen the pickerel population in Lake Manitoba has released fingerlings from a rearing pond in St. Laurent, Manitoba.
The purpose of the release is to replace the pickerel caught in the lake by commercial fisherman throughout the year. The MMF believes that the conservation and preservation of pickerel is crucial for the fishing industry on Lake Manitoba – increasing their size before their release into Lake Manitoba is a surefire way to guarantee a regular population of pickerel continues. The MMF has been releasing the fingerlings every year since the grand opening of the St. Laurent rearing pond in 2006.
The Métis Community has a long standing history and tradition of taking part in conservation and economic activities that have helped develop our provinces which include our lakes. With this history and culture in mind, the Métis continue to be at the forefront for the preservation of this traditional industry in Manitoba.
