Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is encouraged by the Federal Budget announced yesterday afternoon.

The recently announced resources stemming from the Powley decision will allow the Metis to continue working on their rights-based matters that have been denied to the Metis People for so long.

The MMF is also pleased that there is a commitment in the areas of education and health. The Federation is hoping the transition of these areas to the Provinces will allow resources to flow into the Metis communities. The MMF will also continue to press ahead on encouraging the Federal Government to support freshwater commercial fishing. Given the magnitude of the industry, investment by the Federal Government to assist thousands of hard-working Metis in this industry is a priority.

MMF President David Chartrand stated, “We are optimistic about the first budget of the new Federal administration, we hope that it marks the beginning of a new era that will see more resources reach the Metis Nation”.

Another priority area is housing. Clearly, the Metis must be given priority as there have been no new houses built in Metis communities for over 10 years. The Federation will continue to press the Prime Minister to ensure housing is on the agenda for Metis across the country.
