Background

MMF’s Provincial Recruitment Initiative (PRI) is licensed under the Manitoba’s Employment Services Act as an employment agency. Established in November 1997, it is the only employment agency in Manitoba that is Metis-specific. Although the majority of clients are Metis, employment services are also provided to non-Status and Inuit peoples.

Client Services

PRI provides a range of services to clients seeking employment. These services include: needs assessment, career planning, assistance with resume writing, reviewing job search techniques, providing labour market information, referral to academic programs and referral to employers. PRI will also provide follow-up and support while on the job for the employer and the new employee as required.

PRI posts new jobs daily; the main resource area hosts three computers with internet access and word-processing software, job search resources, career planning information and resources (including the CHOICES program for career exploration). A fax machine, printer and copier are available for clients to assist in their job search. PRI now offers typing tutorial software and Prove-it online testing, which includes pre-employment testing (keyboarding, filing, software knowledge, etc.). PRI now has access to online testing through Kenexa Prove It! Online assessments, which includes over 800 tests like Accounting, Call Centre, Healthcare, Industrial, Legal, Microsoft Office Software and TechTest.

On-site career counsellors are available to provide individual employment needs assessments and to assist clients in development of career goals and actions plans. Information on job searches, interview techniques, labour market information, training, and resume and cover letter writing is also available. PRI creates the opportunities and empowers clients by helping them develop the tools they need to be able to do an effective job search.

PRI maintains a database of employment-ready candidates for referral to employersPRI also provides pre-screening for employers, ensuring that clients that are referred for posted positions fit the requirements of the job orders from employers. PRI offers interview preparation, providing the client with coaching through different types of interviews and often specific to employers that we work with through our partnerships.

PRI partners with leading employers to initiate direct referral systems to employment opportunities and to assist in preparing clients to be successful in the application process.

Employer Partnerships

PRI strives to establish dynamic partnerships with employers, promoting its inventory of employment-ready candidates who match employer-defined qualifications criteria. PRI’s success is based on partnerships geared towards empowering Metis people and their communities.

PRI currently manages formal agreements with Manitoba Hydro, the City of Winnipeg, the Health Care Products Association of Manitoba, the Manitoba Food Processors Association, Mount Carmel Clinic, Manitoba Emergency Services College and Manitoba Customer Contact Association. PRI continues to work with employer partners in the development of an Aboriginal employment strategy, ensuring doors are open to Metis, and continue to seek out new employer partnerships as well. Other informal partnerships with employers in and around the city of Winnipeg include, but not limited to:

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
Manitoba Liquor Control Commission
Canada Post
Great Plains Rail Contractors
CN
Wilson Auto Electric
Dominion Windows
Loewen Windows in Steinbach
Home Depot (all locations in Winnipeg)

PRI staff actively seek out new employer partnerships to create new opportunities for employment for our client base. We have had a favourable response to these contacts; new job orders are coming in on a regular basis from new employers as well as employers who have used our services in the past. Job postings are also forwarded through a number of email lists and from internet job sites, and are posted on the PRI job board on a daily basis.

The Provincial Recruitment Initiative is located on the main floor of 150 Henry Avenue. The location is easily accessible by city transit, and we have ample parking available. A new client orientation is held every Monday morning at 9 a.m. To find out more about registering with PRI, please contact us by phone at (204) 586-8474 or email us at pri@mmf.mb.ca This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
