Fitness leader passionate about helping others reach their goals
Personal trainer Jennifer Penner was searching for her purpose a few years ago when a devotional book urged her to pursue something she was passionate about.
"That made complete sense to me," she said. "I had a passion for the feeling of being healthy. I knew I would love to help other people feel the same and knew how to softly motivate them if they were struggling."
Penner had been interested in fitness from a young age, since her father taught her to take care of her physical and nutritional health.
"He ate very healthy, exercised, and read books and articles on fitness," she said. "I suppose it started out as monkey see, monkey do, and became a part of me."
Becoming a fitness trainer allowed Penner to help others while also enjoying what she loved.
"I didn't even finish the book before I registered for all the courses to become a fitness leader," she said. "I completed and was certified in resistance training and a registered personal trainer by the end of the year."
Becoming a fitness trainer allowed Penner to help others while also enjoying what she loved.
Fast forward to today, the mother of three boys offers in-person and virtual strength training through Fitness With Jen. She provides personalized, one-on-one training as well as group classes.
"Some people enjoy online (classes) for time saving, since they do not have to go anywhere and are in the comfort of their own home," she said, adding that online classes are available at a slightly lower price. On the other hand, "Some people enjoy being in-person, as they are able to use a variety of my equipment and aren't limited to what they have at home. Others enjoy in-person to get out of the house and can have a more accurate assessment of whether they are doing the exercises properly."
In addition, the Oakville, Manitoba-based trainer is working on a monthly membership with pre-recorded workouts at varying fitness levels.
"I also enjoy continuing my education so that I can provide further health improvement options," she said.
Asked her advice to anyone interested in becoming a personal trainer, Penner says to be patient and kind, and remember where you yourself started.
"Fitness is not a race, and every individual will go at their own pace and has individual goals," she said.
The Oakville, Manitoba-based trainer is also a mother to three boys.
Penner's health goals have aligned with her developing connection to her Métis heritage.
"In the past two years I have yearned to be closer to nature," she said, adding that she aims to become self-sustainable, eating more food from her garden and eggs from her family's chickens. "I feel nature calling me and want to live off the land the way I feel it was meant to be."
As for Fitness With Jen, she wants clients to know how hard she works to understand their needs.
"I will celebrate your goals with you," she said. "Meeting your goals is what makes me feel successful."
