Federal Government announces investments for Red River Métis housing initiatives

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) and the Government of Canada have come together to reiterate a promise to fund housing projects in the Red River Métis Nation Homeland.

The announcement happened at 184 Eugenie Street in the historical Métis community of St. Boniface, at the construction site of the MMF's six-unit multi-family development, one of many Red River Métis Government projects.

Marielle Gauthier, Associate Minister of French and Michif Language Protection, introduced the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, who said serving communities has always been Canada's priority.

"We know the housing deficit exists across Canada, and frankly, the housing deficit that has existed disproportionally with respect to the Métis around the country," he said. "Today, it is my pleasure to announce an investment of $31.5 million over the next seven years, specifically from Budget 2022, which was announced recently, for the housing priorities of the Red River Métis."

The MMF offers Citizens housing support like the Home Enhancement Loan Program, which provides between $18,000-$25,000 to aid emergency repairs and renovations to improve existing homes. Currently, 690 homes are under construction, $10.6 million has been allotted, and the MMF has received over 1,500 applications for the program.

The Métis Government also boasts a First Time Home Purchase Program, which has helped almost 700 Red River Métis families purchase a new home. To date, there are over 1,200 applications received, and $9.4 million has been invested.

"A safe home protects our families and our Elders. I am so proud to work on behalf of our President (David Chartrand) and all of you, so our children grow up safe and secure, and our Elders will know that we love them," said Will Goodon, MMF Minister of Housing and Property Management.

Building houses for Citizens has been a top priority for the MMF. Ribbon cutting ceremonies are planned for recently constructed units in St. Ambroise and Binscarth. Elsewhere, MMF housing projects are operating in Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, St. Laurent, Brandon, Dauphin, Eriksdale, St. Eustache, and more.

Minister Goodon recognized Canada is facing a housing and rent affordability crisis, and knows that one of the best ways to solve the issue is to build new stock.

"I want to say thank you to our partners: the Government of Canada, Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau, and Marc Miller, for recognizing this incredible work," he said. "The additional funding will help us accomplish much more. We have so much to do, and there is so much need, and we will never rest until we work for every single Métis Citizen who needs help and support in housing."

This funding is part of the Federal Government's previous commitment of over $2.7 billion to support housing in Indigenous communities since 2015. The Liberals' Budget 2022 pledges $4.3 billion over seven years for improving and expanding Indigenous housing in Canada.

The MMF is also investing in 14 child care facilities across the province, a homeless support shelter in Winnipeg, lodging for families who travel to the city for medical services, and an office for the Northwest Region in Dauphin.

La Fédération Métisse du Manitoba (FMM) et le gouvernement du Canada se réunissent pour renouveler leur promesse de financer des projets d'habitation sur le territoire de la Nation des Métis de la rivière Rouge.

L'annonce a été faite sur le chantier de construction d'un complexe multifamilial de six unités, situé au 184 rue Eugénie dans le quartier historique métis de Saint-Boniface. Ce chantier est l'un des multiples projets du gouvernement des Métis de la rivière Rouge.

Marielle Gauthier, ministre adjointe à la Protection de la langue mitchif et du français, a présenté l'honorable Marc Miller, ministre des Relations Couronne-Autochtones. Ce dernier a déclaré que le service aux communautés a toujours été une des priorités du Canada.

« Nous sommes conscients qu'une crise du logement sévit au Canada et, en toute franchise, le déficit de logements est disproportionné en ce qui concerne les Métis de partout au pays », a-t-il dit. « C'est pourquoi j'ai le plaisir d'annoncer aujourd'hui un investissement de 31,5 millions $ sur sept ans, dans le cadre du budget 2022 présenté récemment, pour les priorités en matière de logement chez les Métis de la rivière Rouge. »

La FMM offre à ses citoyens du soutien au logement comme le Programme de prêt pour l'amélioration de l'habitat, qui alloue une somme de 18 000 à 25 000 $ pour les réparations et rénovations d'urgence dans les maisons existantes. Le gouvernement métis est également fier d'offrir le Programme d'accès à une première propriété grâce auquel près de 700 familles de la communauté ont pu acquérir une maison. À ce jour, plus de 1200 demandes ont été reçues et 9,4 millions $ ont été investis.

« Un logement sécuritaire protège nos familles et nos aînés. Je suis si fier de travailler pour notre président (David Chartrand) et pour vous tous. Ensemble, nous nous assurons que nos enfants grandissent en sécurité et que nos aînés se sentent aimés » a déclaré Will Goodon, ministre du Logement et de la gestion des biens immobiliers à la FMM.

La construction de maisons pour les citoyens a toujours été une priorité pour la FMM. Des cérémonies d'inauguration auront lieu pour les logements récemment construits à Saint-Ambroise et à Binscarth. D'autres projets d'habitation sont aussi en cours à Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Saint-Laurent, Brandon, Dauphin, Eriksdale, Saint-Eustache et ailleurs.

Le ministre Goodon a reconnu que le Canada fait face à une crise immobilière et d'accessibilité au logement. Selon lui, une des meilleures solutions à ce problème est de construire de nouvelles places.

« J'aimerais remercier nos partenaires, le gouvernement du Canada, le premier ministre Justin Trudeau ainsi que Marc Miller, qui reconnaissent ce travail extraordinaire », a-t-il déclaré. « Ce financement supplémentaire va nous permettre d'accomplir tellement plus. Il y a tant à faire, il y a tant de besoins, nous ne nous reposerons pas avant d'avoir travaillé pour chaque personne métisse qui a besoin d'aide et de soutien en matière d'habitation. »

Le financement répond à un engagement fédéral datant de 2015, grâce auquel plus de 2,7 milliards $ ont été injectés afin de soutenir l'accès au logement chez les communautés autochtones. Le Budget 2022 des Libéraux promet de contribuer à hauteur de 4,3 milliards $ sur sept ans à l'amélioration et l'expansion de l'habitation autochtone au Canada.

La FMM investit également dans différents projets : 14 établissements de soins aux enfants répartis dans la province, un refuge d'aide aux personnes itinérantes à Winnipeg, l'hébergement de familles qui voyagent vers la ville pour des services médicaux et un bureau pour la Région nord-ouest à Dauphin.
