Little Stars PLAYhouse Breaks Ground in Partnership with Manitoba Metis Federation

August 24, 2020

Winnipeg, MB - On Tuesday, August 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) will join Woman Healing For Change MB Inc. to celebrate breaking ground on Little Stars PLAYhouse Child Care Centre, the future home of the North End Stay and Play (NESP) program. Little Stars PLAYhouse Child Care Centre - which is being built in partnership with the MMF and its affiliates Infinity Women Secretariat (IWS) and Louis Riel Capital Corporation - will be located at 681 Selkirk Ave. between Parr St. and McKenzie St. in Winnipeg.

The "Shovels in the Ground" event will support North End families, with social distancing protocols followed, and Personal Protective Equipment provided for the safety of guests.

Little Stars PLAYhouse is a child care centre with 28 spaces - four infant spaces and 24 preschool spaces. Eight spaces are dedicated to the NESP program, which is available for early years, from newborns up to age five, which will take place during the day. In the evening, the PLAYhouse will offer music programs involving musical instruments and singing.

The weekly and year-round NESP program has been running for over 10 years in varying locations by a community-driven, volunteer-based team at Woman Healing For Change MB Inc. Founded in 1993, the non-profit focuses on breaking barriers that women and their children face and promotes healing from trauma, violence, abuse, and discrimination.

"Every child deserves space to play, and this partnership will ensure that children in the North End will have equal access to resources that foster healthy child development," said Anita Campbell, IWS Spokesperson and MMF Minister of Finance and Human Resources.

"This is one example of the many child care centres that the MMF will be supporting in Manitoba," said MMF President David Chartrand.

The MMF has committed to building several child care centres across Manitoba, investing $9 million this year for Metis culturally specific child care initiatives in Manitoba Metis communities, including Duck Bay, Swan River, Dauphin, and Thompson.
