MMF Awards Students at First Ever Post-Secondary Education Support Ceremony

February 7, 2020

Winnipeg, MB - Today, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is making history by giving out cheques to Metis Students as part of its first ever Post-Secondary Education Support Program (PSESP).

PSESP is a multimillion-dollar initiative used to support Metis students in all years of their post-secondary education.

"We know education is crucial to live a life filled with healthy outcomes," said MMF President David Chartrand. "Education also pushes the Metis Nation forward and today we are empowering these students to take control of their futures."

PSESP was developed after it was learned that Metis Students have historically been denied comprehensive education supports at the post-secondary level. It was also created to help students through financial aid and by providing them with better access to information about entering University.

Today's cheque presentations are part of a 10-year Post-secondary Education Accord between the Federal Government and the MMF. The agreement ensures that Metis students in Manitoba will have access to financial and other student supports over the coming decade.

"This is an incredible and unprecedented opportunity for Metis students," said MMF Minister for Provincial Education, Joan Ledoux. "Thanks to the Reconciliation efforts of the Government of Canada, we are now in position to develop Metis-specific programming and funding from kindergarten all the way into the college and university years."

"It's fitting that we are making these first nine student presentations on the 150th anniversary of the year the Métis Nation joined the Federation of Canada," added President Chartrand. "The Metis Nation has now fully partnered with Canada, governs and sustains itself, and has proven time and time again that we will take care of our Citizens in all stages of their lives."

The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Métis Nation's Manitoba Métis Community. The Manitoba Métis are Canada's Negotiating Partner in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
