MMF mourns respected Elder, founding father

Winnipeg, MB in the Métis Nation Homeland - Elder George Fleury, born in the community of Ste. Madelaine, dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend, and leader has left our Métis Nation.

George was a founding father of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) and has left a legacy for us all. With his kind, quiet, gentle and strong voice, to the end he was an advocate for the fight to preserve our Métis Nationhood. George served the Métis Nation with a silent pride that would stand against any loud or ferocious threat.

George's greatest music hero was Hank Williams. In his early years, George entertained many through his own music - his singing would fill his family home all weekend long, shared with many of his family and friends.

As the first Vice-President of the Southwest Region in the MMF, George was determined that economic development was the way to success for our Métis Citizens and was one of the first to purchase an official MMF building in the early seventies.

George continued in his political life for many years. When he moved to become an Alcohol Counsellor with the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba, he was one of the most sought-after counsellors, known for his no-nonsense personality.

George was a fluent Michif speaker and was an advocate for the language. In his later years he was a member of a number of committees and sat on numerous Boards that worked for the preservation and teaching of the language. His commitment to youth and their learning was another passion that he believed in strongly. Teaching our youth the language was one of many programs that he started during his tenure as Vice-President.

George left his mark on all of us. Those who knew him well will forever feel his presence. His legacy will live on in the strength of his family.

On behalf of the MMF Cabinet and staff, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of George Fleury. The MMF was forever enriched by George's passion, drive and dedication to the Métis Nation. I will always be personally thankful to George for his mentorship, wisdom and friendship over the years.

To his family and friends, know that we share your sorrow and extend our love and prayers as you go through this difficult time. George Fleury and his contributions will always be remembered, honoured and celebrated by the MMF.

La FMM pleure l'un de ses pères fondateurs et aîné respecté

Winnipeg, MB dans la patrie de la Nation métisse - L'aîné George Fleury, né dans la communauté de Ste-Madeleine, père, grand-père, arrière-grand-père, oncle, ami et leader dévoué a quitté notre Nation métisse.

George a été l'un des pères fondateurs de la Fédération Métisse du Manitoba (MMF) et il nous a laissé tout un héritage. Avec sa voix douce, calme et forte, il a défendu jusqu'au bout la lutte pour préserver notre Nation métisse. George a servi la Nation avec une fierté silencieuse qui s'opposait à toute menace forte ou féroce.

L'idole musicale de George était Hank Williams. Dans ses premières années, George divertissait beaucoup de monde grâce à sa propre musique - son chant remplissait la maison familiale tout le week-end, au grand plaisir de sa famille et de ses amis.

En tant que premier vice-président de la région du Sud-Ouest de la FMM, George tenait à ce que le développement économique soit la voie du succès pour nos citoyens métis. Il a été l'un des premiers à acheter un bâtiment officiel de la FMM au début des années soixante-dix.

George a poursuivi sa vie politique pendant de nombreuses années. Connu pour sa personnalité pragmatique, il était souvent sollicité pour donner son avis en tant que conseiller auprès de la Fondation manitobaine de lutte contre l'alcoolisme.

George parlait couramment le michif, langue dont il était un ardent défenseur. Dans les dernières années de sa vie, il a été membre de plusieurs comités et a siégé à de nombreux conseils d'administration qui ont travaillé pour la préservation et l'enseignement de la langue. Son engagement envers les jeunes et leur apprentissage était une autre passion à laquelle il croyait fermement. Enseigner la langue à nos jeunes est l'un des nombreux programmes qu'il a lancés pendant son mandat de vice-président.

George a laissé sa marque sur nous tous. Ceux qui le connaissaient bien sentiront à jamais sa présence. Son héritage vivra dans la force de sa famille.

Au nom du Cabinet et du personnel de la FMM, je tiens à exprimer nos plus sincères condoléances à la famille de George Fleury. La FMM a été enrichie à jamais par la passion, la motivation et le dévouement de George envers la Nation métisse. Je serai toujours personnellement reconnaissant envers George pour son mentorat, sa sagesse et son amitié au fil des ans.

A sa famille et à ses amis, sachez que nous partageons votre peine et que nous vous offrons notre amour et nos prières alors que vous traversez cette période difficile. George Fleury et ses contributions resteront à jamais dans les mémoires, honorés et célébrés par la FMM.
