MMF raises Ukrainian flag at 335 Main and 150 Henry

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), as the National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis, raised the Ukrainian flag at two buildings, 335 Main Street and 150 Henry Avenue, as a start on the MMF's commitment to fly the flag at all buildings.

This is in addition to a $100,000 commitment announced yesterday by the MMF, in support of humanitarian aid for Ukraine. Along with raising the flags, the MMF has created a digital billboard campaign to reflect the support of the Red River Métis for Ukraine and its citizens.

"It is important that we show our solidarity with our Ukrainian neighbours, friends and family," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF. "We want to be sure that everyone driving past Portage and Main or one of our billboards remembers that Ukraine is fighting to preserve their identity and keep their country safe. We must all honour that in every way we can."

Due to a shortage of Ukrainian flags available for purchase, the MMF had initial challenges finding flags to fly. In a uniquely Canadian solution, the MMF engaged members of the Bon Homme Hutterite Colony to manufacture the flags, which they were able to produce overnight.

"I'm so grateful to see so many people, including conscientious objectors to war like our Hutterite friends, come together to make this possible," said President Chartrand. "It speaks to our collective awareness that Ukraine is not just fighting to defend its borders, but to defend democracy itself. It also speaks to the power of our community in Manitoba when we are united and work together. I know we are proud to stand with Ukraine today and every day that Ukrainians must fight for freedom."
