Statement from Shawn Nault, Minister responsible for Red River Métis Veterans on Remembrance Day
November 11, 2024
Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), National Government of the Red River Métis, joins every Canadian in expressing our heartfelt gratitude for every Veteran and active serving member, along with their families.
As we gather with our loved ones in our warm homes this Remembrance Day, I encourage everyone to reflect on the sacrifices that Veterans made to give us the comfortable lives we live today.
Since becoming Minister of the Red River Métis Veterans Department, I have had the great privilege of hearing the stories of our Red River Métis and other Veterans, who dedicated their lives to our country. Many generations of young Canadians have bravely stood up to defend our allies, risking their lives at home and abroad to bring peace and prosperity to future generations.
Today, we honour our Veterans' historic strength and resilience, as well as that of their loved ones, who anxiously awaited their children and partners, knowing that some would never return home. The fortunate ones who did return, did not move forward without struggle; they carry the weight of their harrowing experiences with them every day.
Our Red River Métis Veterans, despite serving shoulder to shoulder on the battlefields with other Canadians as equals, often returned home to face discrimination instead of the dignity and respect that all Veterans deserve.
This Remembrance Day, the Red River Métis Veterans Department, the MMF and all Citizens honour all those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect freedom and democracy. On behalf of the National Government of the Red River Métis, I reiterate our thanks to our Veterans and all Veterans, along with their loved ones. We will continue to listen to your stories, preserve your legacies, and remember your sacrifices for us all.
Lest we forget.
